Sondrio

The province of Sondrio, the northest one, is constituted by Valtellina and by several valleys surrounding it: Valchiavenna, Malenco Valley, Masino Valley, Valfurva and Spluga Valley.

Between the Rhaetian and Orobie Alps, it is the most alpine town of the Region, with its breathtaking landscapes and views. Between XI and XIII Century, the City of Milan and the Bishops of Como contended for the control of this town until, before 1340, it joined the rule of Azzone Visconti. In 1512, it passed under the rule of the Grigioni and it was compelled to accept Protestantism and only in 1797 joined the Cisalpine Republic. With the coming of the Austrians, the street to Spluga was laid out and the one to Stelvio was continued. The area of the National Park of Stelvio is a tourist target, famous for the beauty of its landscape, for the opportunity to make various excursions and for winter sports. The most famous areas are: Bormio, Madesimo and the anenco Church. The most important artistic and historical heritage is in Sondrio, Chiavenna, Tirano and Grosio.
