This City has a very ancient origin, called “Ticinum” by the Romans, changed its name into “Papia” towards the end of the VII Century. The City developped around an ancient nucleous with regular
streets, thus becoming the capital of the Longobard territories. There are many magnificent Romanesque churches and many towers dating back to the 11th and 12th Century. Pavia is also the seat of an ancient and important University, which used to be the prestigious centre for the studies of the Duchy of Milan.
