It is situated in the middle of the Region and it is famous for its various landscapes. As a matter of fact, it extends from the lowland as far as the Orobie Alps. The morphology of the land is varied: mountains, hills and valleys, of which the main ones are Seriana and Brembana, lowlands, rivers, Endine Lake and Iseo Lake.
After the Visconti were defeated at Maclodio (1427), the City of Bergamo was controlled by Venice, under the rule of Bartolomeo Colleoni, a condottiere from Bergamo. In 1797, the composer Gaetano Donizzetti was born. Bergamo is one of the most visited cities because of its historical, monumental and environmental testimonies, for its great walls and for the well-known picture-gallery of Carrara
Academy. Very popular places to go for trips and on holiday are Foppolo, which has a well-equipped ski resort, Clusone, San Pellegrino terme, Gandino e Almenno San Salvatore. The main spas are: San Pellegrino Terme, above mentionned, Gaverina Terme, Terme di S. Omobono Imagna and Trescore Balneario. The city of Bergamo is divided into Lower Bergamo and Upper Bergamo. Lower Bergamo is the real heart of the life of its citizens, whereas Upper Bergamo preserves the aspect of a Medieval
town, with very narrow and winding streets. It keeps its walls intact which were built in the 16th Century by the Republic of Venice.
