Two centuries and a whole legion of architects, sculptors and painters: so much they need to decore the grandiose monumental complex of the Certosa of Pavia. The monastery, today entrusted to the Cistercians of the Casamari Community, was founded as a certosino Monastery by Gian Galeazzo Visconti in 1396.
As a whole, really imposive, it is composed by the Church with a nave and two side aisles, with two cloisters, Small Cloister decorated in terracotta and the Big Cloister, where the 24 cells of the monks open and from the Ducal Palace, built in the XVII century: a series of courtyards completes the monastry.
Do not forget to see inside the Church the side chapels decorated by the Perugino, Bergognone and Guercino, the triptych made of ivory and the room of the Washhouse with a painting of Bernardo Luini. The High Altar made of marble and lapislazuli with wooden-marquetry decorated seats is remarkable
The long life of the Charterhour and the quantity of artistic treasures which preservs, has often put it in the middle of curious events, such as the stealing of the ivory triptych of the school of the Embriachi.
