Sirmione, praised by the roman poet Catullo in his poems, was till this period a famous spa for wealthy Patriks. All this is well showed by the escavations.
Situated on a peninsula in the middle of the lake, we can get this village crossing the scaligero castle's bridge where there are elegant shops, restaurants and cafès.
Lazise, Desenzano and Toscolano Maderno are other famous villages of this lake, and the fans of windsurf can not forget Torbole, north of Benaco ( the ancient name of this lake). The Bardolino village remember us the local production of the excellent red wine. The temperate climate of the area is favourable for the cultivation of olive tree, that gives an appreciated oil. The name of Salò is written in the history books, it was in the past the birthplace of the fascism. The homonym Social Republic had its head quarter in the Gargnano villa Feltrinelli property of the well-known editors family. Curious is the fact that the famous Gian Giacomo, who died planning a bomb outrage ,was a member of that very family.
In Gardone we can admire the famous villa named " Il Vittoriale", where the warrior poet Gabriele d'Annunzio spent his last years. In a decadent atmosphere there are a lot of mementos of the poet's adventuring life: on the ceiling of one of the rooms is hanged an airplane that he used fly to over Vienna during the war.
In the gardens during summertime a lot of D'Annunzio theatral exbitions are performed. Don't forget to visit also the Botanic Garden Hruska luxuriant of local vegetation as palms and citrus fruit.
Not far there is Lake Idro that could be a pleasant destination for short or long trips.
